2021 AWARD WINNER

The Cold-Formed Steel Engineers Institute (CFSEI) has named Matthew (Matt) Mancl, P.E. as the recipient of the 2021 CFSEI John P. Matsen Award for Distinguished Service. The award recognizes the significant contributions of an individual who has volunteered time, talent and resources to the cold-formed steel industry. It was renamed in 2016 to honor John P. Matsen, P.E., founder and principal of Matsen Ford Design Associates in Waukesha, Wisconsin, who passed away in June 2015. Matt was recognized during the 2021 CFSEI Virtual Expo held May 18-20.

Matt is a project manager for ClarkDietrich Engineering Services LLC and is committed to advancing the cold-formed steel industry. He is a former member of CFSEI’s Executive Committee and past chairperson of its Education Committee. During his tenure on the CFSEI Executive Committee, Matt was instrumental in coordinating the online version of the 2020 CFSEI Expo, a significant effort undertaken to transform a live event to an online format due to social distancing restrictions implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The successful 2020 CFSEI Expo ensured that attendees from around the world could continue to learn and share best practices for cold-formed steel framing.

Matt has also played a key role in expanding the content of CFSEI’s webinar and educational programs, incorporating a broader representation of ideas and construction methods. The audience for CFSEI webinars has grown under Matt’s leadership. The bimonthly webinars have become an essential continuing education tool for engineers, architects, building officials and contractors.

Matt received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Valparaiso University in 2008. He began his career in cold-formed steel design that same year when he completed an internship with Dietrich Design Group, Inc. His aptitude for cold-formed design led to a full-time position and several promotions since within Dietrich Design Group, Inc. and ClarkDietrich Engineering Services LLC. In his current position with ClarkDietrich Engineering Service LLC, Matt serves as a liaison between design engineers and clients, providing coordination with engineers of record, architects and other trades to provide the best designs and ensure the clients’ needs are met. In addition to his project management responsibilities, he continues to design with cold-formed steel and keep up with the best design practices. He is valued by clients for his technical knowledge, understanding of project conditions, and ability to deliver practical yet creative solutions. With over 12 years of experience, Matt has managed and designed many cold-formed steel projects ranging in scope from simple curtainwall building envelopes to façade-coordination to multi-story load bearing structures. He maintains a professional engineering license in Illinois.
