Using his experience and knowledge as a principal in one of the engineering firms concentrating on cold-formed steel design in the United States, Pat Ford will take participants through several different types of Mid-Rise buildings, discussing design considerations including cost, fire protection, weights, soils, plan irregularity and trade coordination. The highlight of the webinar will be a case study of Wheaton Courthouse Square, in metro Chicago, a 6 story condominium over two parking levels. In this case study he will be showcasing the following:
- Design considerations for this project
- Design Processes for the different portions of the building
- Problem areas and design solutions for this project
Pat will also discuss the various types and combinations of cold-formed steel and hybrid systems.

Presenter
Pat Ford is a graduate of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He is a principal of Matsen Ford Design Associates, Inc., a registered Professional Engineer in Wisconsin and in numerous other states, and a member of the ASCE and AISC. He is also a subcommittee member of the AISI and AWCI, and is a past President and member of the Board of Directors of the LGSEA/CFSEI.
His professional experience includes principal management and engineering design with Matsen Ford Design, as well as managing engineering and business development for a central Wisconsin design/build firm. He has also been a facilities planner for a multinational manufacturing company and a project engineer for a major steel construction products manufacturer. His work in these positions has involved nearly all structural design, contract, and project management functions on a wide variety of commercial, industrial, and institutional building projects, in addition to sales, marketing, and management of negotiated design/build work.
Relative to cold-formed steel framing, his experience includes the application of many of the latest technologies and design concepts to both load bearing structures and a wide variety of curtainwall and prefabricated systems. Pat’s engineering systems design experience also includes structural steel, concrete, engineered masonry, wood, and other systems, in addition to cold-formed steel. He has building credits throughout the country as well as several projects outside the U.S.
