Presentation Outline: As the use of building information modeling (BIM) has grown in building construction, many construction professionals have not consistently incorporated cold-formed steel (CFS) framing in their building models. In some cases, it has been part of the finish or partition or ceiling systems; in others, it has been fully modeled as part of the structural system: especially when used as bearing walls or floors or trusses. This seminar had some basic information for novices with BIM, as well as more advanced information for experienced modelers wanting to properly incorporate CFS framing systems. An overview example was presented on how to model CFS in Revit®, as well as a discussion of the pros and cons of various available BIM software packages. Participants learned how BIM processes can change the typical cold-formed steel workflows and benefit the entire team, as well as what additional opportunities exist to leverage BIM and enhance project delivery.

Presenter Erich Bretz, P.E., is a Principal and co-founder of MB BIM Solutions, LLC, a structural engineering integrated practice consultancy based in Denver, Colorado. He obtained his bachelors and masters degrees in Civil Engineering and Structural Engineering respectively from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has more than 10 years of engineering consulting experience as a design and project engineer on numerous CFS medical, resort, mixed use, education, and office building projects. His current efforts are focused on utilizing BIM technology to efficiently transition projects from design, to fabrication, to construction. He has overseen the engineering and BIM coordination on numerous projects across the country.
Dan McCloskey, P.E., is a Principal and co-founder of MB BIM Solutions, LLC. He obtained his bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his masters degree in Structural Engineering from Purdue University. He brings extensive experience in the commercial construction industry, including expertise in design and project management as a structural engineering consultant for both building and bridge projects. Dan has spent the last five years developing an expertise in BIM software and processes that has included BIM management, training, and custom content creation.
