COLD-FORMED STEEL STRAP BRACED WALLS : AISI S213 TO S400 WEBINAR

Presentation Outline: A common means to construct the lateral load resisting system of cold-formed steel structures is to provide diagonal tension-only strap braces in the walls. The strap walls act as a vertical concentrically braced system, which transfers the lateral loads from the roof and floor levels to the foundation. Provisions for the design of strap braced walls can be found in AISI S213-07 "North American Standard for Cold-Formed Steel Framing – Lateral Design". A new standard AISI S400 "North American Standard for Seismic Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Systems" is being developed to replace AISI S213; this new Standard will contain seismic specific design requirements and updates from recent research programs.

The objective of the presentation is to provide designers with information on the inelastic lateral load carrying performance of CFS frame strap braced walls that are assembled using screws and welds, and to relate laboratory observations with the provisions found in AISI S213 & S400. The design provisions were based on the results of over eighty tests of braced walls constructed of different configurations of braces, connections, aspect ratio, etc.

Colin RogersDr. Colin Rogers is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics at McGill University, Montreal Canada. He has been involved in research on cold-formed steel structures for over twenty years, and most recently has concentrated on better understanding the response to lateral loading of CFS framed walls and diaphragms. The main objective of his research is to develop seismic design standards for CFS structures that can be used in conjunction with the National Building Code of Canada. To date, he has participated in the testing of over 350 CFS walls constructed with wood sheathing, steel sheathing and with strap bracing, as well as 50 tests on corrugated steel roof deck diaphragms. Current research involves an evaluation of the influence of non-structural components on these various wall framing systems and on the overall building response to lateral loading. He is a committee member of the following technical standards: CSA S16 Design of Steel Structures, CSA S136 North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members, AISI COFS S400 North American standard for seismic design of cold-formed steel structural systems, and AISI COFS S213 North American standard for cold-formed steel framing – lateral design.
