Presentation Outline: Loading a Cold-Formed Steel section is unique compared to other sections engineers are familiar designing since the load path does not typically travel through the shear center. This eccentricity will cause twist and sway of the members if they are not properly braced. The brace force for individual sections then must be transferred through the system. Therefore the system as a whole must be braced and designed to carry this force.
In addition to the completed design which carries the permanent load the designer may be asked to design temporary bracing for the construction phase of the project. Many Cold Formed Steel failures due to lack of bracing occur during this stage of installation. Recommendations have been provided to guide the designing engineer through this process.
This presentation will explain why different sections and systems need bracing, when to use bracing and make it effectively and how to design it. This presentation will review the monograph “Bracing Cold-Formed Steel Structures: A Design Guide” co-authored by the presenter and provide updates since it was published.
If cold form steel is an element in your building you must know how to properly brace it during construction and for permanent loading. The engineer must know how to properly design the bracing while the architect needs understand bracing to ensure they comply with the needs, especially if the bracing is the wall sheathing, and the contractor must know how to install it and where it is required.
